Overview

Autodesk technology and training services helped Build Health International design and build an energy-efficient 13,600-square-foot hospital in rural Haiti.

Challenge

Villagers in Carrefour commune of Ouest, Haiti live just 10 miles from the capital city of Port-au-Prince, but upwards of two hours from medical care due to unpaved roads and Ouest’s mountainous location.

More than 50,000 people rely on a single, three-room primary clinic in Ouest. Those seeking care often arrive before sunrise and wait all day for care. Haiti’s maternal mortality rate is currently the highest in the Western hemisphere.

Solution

Build Health International (BHI), is a U.S. nonprofit organization, with a mission to provide dignified, quality healthcare for every person. Using Autodesk software, BHI is designing and building the Saint Rock Hospital project, a 13,600-square-foot primary care hospital in Ouest.

Every stage of the Saint Rock Hospital project benefits from Autodesk software, from site grading and construction

to internal communications and design iterations.Through the Technology Impact Program, Autodesk donated seven technologies (Autodesk® AEC Collection, Autodesk® AutoCAD®, Autodesk® BIM 360® Design, Autodesk® BIM 360® Docs, Autodesk® Civil 3D®, Autodesk® Insight™, Autodesk® Revit®) to BHI to support the design of a high-quality, low cost, & energy efficient hospital.

Donated technologies

“We always have to keep iterating and adapting to overcome the challenges. Sometimes it can seem impossible at first, but we can always make it possible with Autodesk software.”

Result

With Autodesk software, BHI designed an energy-efficient hospital using local materials in a challenging terrain. By running an existing Revit file through Insight 360, BHI was able to identify unnecessary lighting and incorporate natural daylighting and passive ventilation.

With Revit, the team could create a design that fit common construction methods and materials in Haiti, aligning with the needs of local builders and engineers.

BHI used drones to survey the mountainous terrain of Ouest, informing BHI’s site models in Revit, and grading design in Civil 3D.

The Saint Rock Hospital will expand Ouest’s healthcare capacity by 400%, treating 200 patients a day and expanding maternity care in an energy-efficient campus.

“BIM 360 gives us the power to understand how design choices affect energy use. We use the model to find ways to keep buildings cool and well-lit while minimizing reliance on electricity.”
